Nicola Formichetti Unveils Nicopanda During NYFW

There’s the work that you do for everyone else. Then, there’s “what you really love,” said Diesel creative director, Uniqlo designer, and transcontinental superstylist Nicola Formichetti. For Formichetti, the passion-driven work is Nicopanda, his very cute, Harajuku girls-meets-urban sportswear line. The 2011-founded line, which has taken shape as more of a much-loved cult merchandiser until now, graduated to full-on collection with a cake and champagne-filled presentation in Tribeca yesterday. “It’s my DNA,” Formichetti explained of the collection. “I was born in Japan and brought up in Europe and live here, so it’s all kind of intercontinental crazy. It’s very like Tumblr.” The unisex clothing includes floor-length, mesh ruffled gowns, pale pink and white basketball shorts with ruffled detailing, sheer baby blue sleeveless jerseys with an “N” inscribed, and more. “Nicopanda used to be just kind of a spiritual character, but now it’s a full fashion collection,” said Formichetti. “And the response has been insane! I might have to do a fashion show next season!”
