Muji’s New Designer Tiny Houses Are a Minimalist’s Dream

Though sprawling mansions with kitted out amenities and acres of land will aways be the fantasy for most people, tiny homes are having a moment. From HGTV’s House Hunters spinoff Tiny House Hunters to the various “tiny housing initiatives” that’ve been popping up around the country, it’s clear: Living large is now all about living small.

So it seems only natural that Muji—the minimalist Japanese housewares retailer, specializing in all things functional and not frivolous—should get in on the action.

Just in time for Tokyo’s annual Design Touch event, the brand has unveiled three micro-homes, aka ‘Muji Huts,’ each created in collaboration with designers Naoto Fukasawa, Jasper Morrison, and Konstantin Grcic, and intended as an “escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.” The miniature, pre-fab houses were all designed to be environmentally sound, as well as mobile—and of course, fit in with Muji’s necessities-only mantra.

It’s not yet known whether Muji’s Huts will actually be produced (or whether they’d be available in the U.S.)—but either way, they’re still a little fun to look at! Click through to see more.
