How Much It Really Costs to Be a Wedding Guest
How much does it really cost to be a wedding guest? A lot more than you think. According to a new study, the average wedding guest spent $888 per wedding in 2016. If you attended a wedding last year, we know what you’re thinking—I didn’t spend nearly that much. But take a moment to remember everything that it took to get you to and from your friend’s special day. There was, of course, a gift, and likely some amount spent on travel—whether it was measured in gallons of gas used or miles in the air flown. Then there’s often, but not always, overnight accommodation, and the very important question of what you wore to the weekend’s various events. For those who are in the wedding, prices can really skyrocket.
In the more than 1,000 people surveyed, The Knot’s annual survey found that the average guest spends at least $118 on the wedding gift. If you’re in the wedding, that number likely spikes past $177. Seventy-seven percent of those in the wedding party said that they bought a new outfit, with the average amount spent coming in at $207. When it came to guests, 48 percent said that they purchased a new outfit, with most people spending $81 on their clothing. Moreover, 37 percent of guests reported having to travel for a wedding. In those cases, the average amount spent on transportation came in at $321, while accommodations cost almost the exact same amount at $322. Sixty-eight percent of attendants traveled for a wedding, spending a respective $342 on travel and $293 for accommodations. And for those who attended bachelorette and bachelor parties, 60 percent said that they spent $500 or less on the events. In other words? It really is incredibly expensive to go to a wedding, regardless of whether or not you’re in the bridal party.
