Me, Me, Me: Monograms Are Suddenly Super Cool Again

It used to be considered kind of dorky to label your clothing. But thanks to fashion’s recent infatuation with all things personalized, the coolest way to make a statement this winter is to make sure everyone knows your name.

Though monogramming is nothing new — the practice dates all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times — this recent batch of name-emblazoned items feels fresh thanks to unstuffy fonts and oversized lettering. And, with more and more downtown labels offering the service on pieces as varied as swimsuits and shoes, the detail is no longer reserved for the Lilly Pulitzer and Brooks Brothers set. Earlier this month, Western boot brand Frye held a pop-up in New York where customers could emblazon rugged leather goods with hand-stitched initials; and at Tory Sport — the sleek athleisure arm of Tory Burch in New York— customers can have their initials embroidered on any item in the store for just $20 a pop. And, proving that customized clothing won’t be going anywhere anytime soon: For Spring 2016, Madewell’s denim jackets were photographed with cheeky “Your Name Here” stitching over the breast pockets.

But perhaps the biggest indicator of how far monogramming has come? It-girls like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Olivia Palermo — not to mention pretty much every editor at Vogue — have been sporting the style nonstop. Whether in the form of Anya Hindmarch’s embossed leather handbag stickers (so popular they generated $18 million for the brand since launching just last year) or the customized silk dress shirts by Marie Claire St. John, name-emblazoned clothing has become the unspoken uniform du jour among the fashion set.

Here, a few of our favorite ways to get in on the trend. And, don’t forget: If you’re feeling particularly generous, they also make excellent gifts. Hint hint.
