Model Moment: Front Row With Natasha Poly at Roberto Cavalli

On Wednesday night in Milan, Natasha Poly literally stopped traffic. The 30-year-old mom — and current face of Versace — crossed the street to get to the Roberto Cavalli show, and suddenly, the cars outside screeched to a halt. (#SupermodelProblems.)

Inside the venue — the Palazzo Spinola’s “Gold Gallery,” built in 1583, lined with crystal chandeliers, and wallpapered with oil paintings older than America itself — waiters offered iced vodka to the crowd, including Carine Roitfeld, Bianca Brandolini, and dozens of jet lagged American fashion editors.

Poly declined the booze, but she did say yes to an interview with Yahoo Style. Because, you know, we’re spetaccolore—that’s awesome, in Italian.

Yahoo Style: You’re best friends with designer Peter Dundas. How did you two meet?

Natasha Poly: Peter worked for Roberto Cavalli before he became [famous]. So the first time we met, it’s because he was fitting me for a dress. It was at the very start of my career, when we were both working for Roberto Cavalli himself. When someone is pinning clothes on you, it takes time, and you get to know people very well. [Laughing.]

Naomi Campbell and Kim Kardashian love him too. Why?

Well for me, I was very impressed by his energy, because he was very sensitive—he really wanted to know how I felt in the clothes. If they were comfortable, if I felt confident in them. Years later, I think that’s why he’s become so big—because women really trust him, and because he’s actually, genuinely interested in the people he’s working with. Peter and I have a beautiful history together, but now, we’re still friends, and it’s been eleven years! I’m very happy for him. And I’m very happy to wear his clothes!

You recently told French Vogue that glitter is a trend that needs to die. But glitter eye shadow was at Burberry and Saint Laurent. What should we wear instead?

Oh no, glitter on your eyes doesn’t count! That kind of glitter is cool. When I said “no glitter,” I meant, you know, don’t do it all over the face, and definitely don’t do it all over the body. My daughter is two; she can have glitter all over her body, and all over her clothes. But glitter just on the eyes is cool. You should definitely keep doing that.

“Glowing skin” is a popular internet search term… and you have it. How do you get it, even with all the makeup you have to wear for photo shoots?

The reality is, your skin changes all the time when you travel. Your skin changes all the time when you’re stressed. So if you’re, you know, a real live person, your skin is going to have some times that aren’t as good. The best advice I’ve ever gotten about my skin is to drink lots of water. It’s so easy but we often forget to do that. I drink a lot of water, and I’ve just become a vegan.

Being a vegan makes a difference?

For great skin, it works. I’m never puffy anymore. My skin is always good. I swear, it’s because of the diet.

What’s been the hardest thing to give up?

Oh, easy. When you go to a friend’s house and they cook for you, like at a dinner party or something, and you know they’re such a good cook and it smells delicious but you can’t eat it—that’s the hardest part!

You’re in the current Versace campaign with Gigi Hadid. Who else are models we should be watching this season?

Vanessa Moody and Hanna Verhees. They’re two of my favorites right now. One is blonde, one is brunette, but both of them are very sensual and sexy. And I like that a lot. It’s good to see strong women on the runway. It’s good to see them everywhere!
