Miley Cyrus Nails the Shock Value Makeunder With Her Billboard Awards Performance

Miley Cyrus returned to her country roots with a new sound—and a soft new look at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

At this year’s Billboard Music Awards, Miley Cyrus performed her new single “Malibu” in a wide-brimmed hat, billowing white off-the-shoulder crop-top—and “for the first time in years, in pants!” said her sister, Noah, who, along with dad Billy Ray, introduced the pop star’s performance. But it was Cyrus’s beauty look, a makeunder replete with bleach blonde beach waves, glowing sun-kissed skin, and soft-focus lids that proved most shocking.

Cyrus’s new onstage aesthetic was a marked departure from the occasionally controversial self-reinvention that has marked her career in years past. This time, in place of twerking, blow-up dolls, or jumbo foam fingers, she took the mic with a pared-down beauty that kept the focus on her powerhouse vocals and country-inflected sound. For a performer as provocative as Cyrus, a stripped-back look may be boundary-pushing in itself—but she’s never looked happier or healthier while serving up great music on her own terms.
