Met Gala 2017: Kendall Jenner's Naked Dress Is Made From One Piece of String

Is Kendall Jenner wearing lingerie on the red carpet at the 2017 Met Gala? Or is it, in fact, a dress? It’s neither—or both, maybe—because all she wore was single strand of string that masqueraded as a dress, which explains why there’s, um, so little of it.

"The entire gown is made from one piece of string," says Julia Haart, the La Perla creative director, tells Elle. "It's a very strong, very flexible, incredibly thin piece of nylon, and we've strung 85,000 crystals onto it. "

The lingerie-turned-ready-to-wear brand La Perla (Jenner was the face of its spring 2017 campaign, btw) recruited a team of artisans in five cities—Milan, Bologna, Los Angeles, Rome, and New York –along with engineers to turn Haart’s out-there vision into the miraculous feat that it is. The result? A woven see-through number that features a sternum-exposing, shoulder-to-hip bone slash, a hip-high slit, a draped open back, and embroidered crystals all over.

In other words, the supermodel’s Met Gala look included a glittering piece of string, a barely there back lace one-piece, and mesh Louboutin pumps. And that’s it. (Though, to be fair, she wasn’t the only Jenner who was nearly nude on the carpet—Kylie showed up in her own version: a sheer embroidered fringed creation by Versace). Scroll through to see Kendall’s naked dress at every single angle.
