Meet the New Accessory Designer You’ll Soon Be Obsessed With
Even if you don’t know the name Mercedes Castillo yet, you’d better write her name down right now.
Mercedes Castillo is launching her first namesake line today, featuring an assortment of highly covetable handbags, shoes, and jewelry. The line can best be described as “modernism meets romanticism” for its vibrant use of color, modern style details, and clear artistic and architectural influences.
Standout favorites include babouche-style flats, two-tone leather mules, and slides featuring Castillo’s new signature “stacked petals” detail, made of delicate cut chiffon in the form of 3D petals.
The vivid colors found across the collection are a mix of rosy pink, canary yellow, and tomato red. The vibrant colors can be attributed to Castillo’s artistic influences, including Carmen Herrera and Ellsworth Kelly — both revered American modern, abstract minimalist painters.
Castillo’s play on typical sculptural shapes is also applied to her Pom Crossbody Bag, made of rolled leather to create a layered appearance, as well as the woodblock on her heels, which mimic a similar texture and silhouette as the famed wooden staircase by architect Isay Weinfeld.
Castillo hails from Madrid, and her work pedigree stems from designer stints at Donna Karan and Tory Burch. It was at Tory where she helped with the brand’s successful footwear launch. Now Mercedes has brought her talent to the Camuto Group, with which she collaborated to launch her first namesake line.
