After a monthlong hiatus from Instagram and her 1.6 million followers, McKayla Maroney is back with a burst of photos, some showing the former Olympic gymnast — whose on-the-podium smirk brought her instant fame back in 2012 — wearing jeans and a cute PJ top over a bikini.

The 21-year-old aspiring pop singer posted her comeback photo, a blurry long-haired image, on Wednesday, writing “happy 2 be back.” But it was another post in which Maroney took the opportunity to explain her social media cleanse.

little sneak peak of my friend @wadeahampton new music video & little update for u guys✨so i just recently got into a pretty intense car accident w a couple friends in la, and it seriously got me thinking how quick ur life can be taken from u. so many of us waste time doing things out of habit, instead of pure passion.. obviously u have to work hard to get to where u wana be, but i hope one day everyone can just get to a point where they only do what they love. with that being said, social media gets pretty heavy on me sometimes, and that's why i disappear a lot. it's purely for my own sanity, and happiness. i also have been busy (doing what i DO love) writing/making music, and i thought i'd rather give u guys dope music, than have a lit instagram. anyway, wades the one who convinced me to come back on, so u can thank him for that lol. he produced this song himself, and i've been sitting here watching him for 6hours produce a new one. he's taught me so much about sound/production and i have barely even touched the surfacei have a long way to go but that's what's cool!!! with gymnastics i really hit my peak, so it's inspiring (and fkn humbling) to be a complete amateur at something all over again. (sometimes it's depressing, but mostly exciting lol) like for example, i'm secretly jealous this isn't my song/video but what gymnastics did teach me, is that great things take time. so i'm tryna be patient, and not just drop a song cuz i can. i want things to be perfect. SO, if ur still reading this, i want to thank u for following me on this journey. i've deffinitely changed a lot along the way, but hey, i was 15 when i made an instagram. i'm 21 now, done w gymnastics & tryna be a kid for once in my life. i can't promise perfection, but i can promise that i'll always promote following ur dreams, loving yourself, and not letting anyone tell u how to live ur life. -ok my rant is over, take away here is DONT TAKE ANOTHER SECOND FOR GRANTED, DO EVERYTHING U CAN TO CREATE THE LIFE (YOU) WANT. (NOT WHAT SOMEONE WANTS 4 U) AND DONT BE SCARED TO WORK FKN HARD IT. love you all, stay g
