Malia Obama Has Already Mastered the Art of “No Comment”

Don’t look for her quote in the *Harvard Crimson* any time soon.

Malia Obama is officially a freshman at Harvard. Per Page Six, the 19-year-old former First Daughter arrived on campus Tuesday and couldn’t slip by unnoticed. Several fellow freshmen documented her arrival, accompanied by her father, on their social-media pages; Boston Globe reporter Steve Annear went one step further by introducing himself, but as he told Page Six, she declined to comment but “politely shook his hand.” We can only imagine the anxiety of a fledgling Harvard Crimson reporter trying to get a word in with the young Obama, and we have only this advice: try your luck with someone else.

From the ages of 9 to 18 Malia lived in one of the most watched, reported on, and scrutinized houses in the world. She’s been in the proximity of journalists at every turkey pardon and Christmas tree lighting—and even at a state dinner where she met Ryan Reynolds. She has already interned for the Weinstein Company, where surely there were plenty of publicists on hand to help her master the art of “no comment.”

And at Harvard, Malia might even stand a decent chance of becoming just another student. As the Globe noted in May 2016, she is just one of 2,037 applicants accepted into the freshman class of 2017.

“To be honest, this place is so strange, [Malia Obama’s presence] wouldn’t change anything at all,” one student told the Globe at the time. “It’s part of the weirdness that is Harvard.”

Having hosted Natalie Portman, Rashida Jones, and Ashley Judd, Harvard may be the one place where Malia can have a normal college experience. And if not, there's another famous face on the way to take some of the attention; Black-ish’s Yara Shahidi will be there next year.
