Despite growing acceptance that depression is perfectly normal, stigma and lack of understanding still surrounds a depression diagnosis. But the issue of depression simply isn’t going away: Just this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that depression continues to be a pervasive problem for Americans, with the suicide rate rising by 24 percent between 1999 and 2014.

Sometimes, the best way to handle this heartbreaking mental disorder is with a bit of levity and a dose of hard truth. As The Mighty points out, that’s exactly what Youtuber Amy Geliebter has done with her new video, “Depression Makeup Tutorial,” where she gives tongue-in-cheek advice on how to put your face on when depression is eating you up inside.

Need primer? Try chemical imbalances and be sure to cover those unsightly blemishes with a heavy application of “denial and emotional repression.” Oh, and don’t forget your “ You Don’t Need Medication” eye shadow; it really makes the eyes pop!

We love Amy’s lighthearted approach to such a serious issue. While depression is a big mental battle that can be exhausting to fight, many people who struggle with the issue are able to find some relief through humor and laughter. Beloved Internet blogger Allie Brosh chronicled her major struggles with deep depression through a witty and wonderful blog series, and many comedians also rely on their sense of humor to give them a needed daily boost when dealing with psychological issues like bipolar disorder, anxiety, and even addiction.

Not only can using humor be helpful for the joke-teller, it can also benefit the listener as well. Since one of the symptoms of depressive conditions is a feeling of isolation, knowing that there are other people out there surviving the same fight can be a big help to those feeling alone.
