Lust-worthy travel find: Maiyet x Mola Sasa clutch

In fashion, luxury and ethics don’t always collide. Enter Maiyet, a brand that partners with global artisans in developing countries to integrate their traditional handcrafted techniques into every collection, the latest being Colombian brand Mola Sasa.

Based in New York, Maiyet’s commitment to sustaining artisan communities includes a partnership with not-for-profit organization NEST, which trains and develops artisan-run businesses in countries such as India, Indonesia, Bolivia, and Kenya. This modus operandi not only leads to some seriously covetable statement pieces but also introduces Maiyet’s consumers to a life outside of their own, allowing them to share in the magic of historic cultural craftsmanship from around the world.

Maiyet’s latest collection pays homage to Colombia’s heritage in collaboration with Mola Sasa, where accessories are handcrafted by female artisans of the indigenous community of Kuna. Using Maiyet’s sustainable silks from India and Colombia’s graphic textiles, this fusion of culture is as beautiful as it is meaningful.

The standout from the six-piece collaboration is the decorative pink and black clutch that I’ll be toting during all of my travels this summer. It was made by applying fine-cut layers of Maiyet’s Veranasi silks to Kuna’s own apparel fabrics. Each design is unique to the Kuna woman who worked on it.

The mix of graphic neutrals with a pop of color will give your holiday look an unexpected twist. And you'll know you're carrying a bag encapsulating the very different traditions of Indian, Colombian, and American cultures, proving once again that cultural unison has the power to create something quite beautiful.
