Sassy Little Girl Tells Michelle Obama She Doesn’t Look 51

For the annual invented holiday Take Your Daughter to Work Day (sorry, I mean Take Your Daughter and Sons to Work Day—three cheers for gender equality!) on April 22, the White House invited the children of staffers to a question-and-answer session with Michelle Obama.

One kid asked who’s the most interesting person MObama’s met since becoming First Lady (the Queen of England, the Pope, other monarchs, Nelson Mandela, and American royal George Clooney); another asked who she counts as her personal inspiration ( her mom, obvi); someone else just really wanted to know about the family’s process of moving from Chicago to Washington, and whether they had to do it themselves (“Yeah, we had help moving. I didn’t have to lift a finger.”). But the best question came from Anaiyah, a little girl wearing a white dress with a pink sash, who asked the FLOTUS, “How old are you?”

Obama, who was glowing in a Mary Katrantzou floral print dress, answered honestly, even though she couldn’t quite believe that she was being put on the spot like that (Anaiyah, if there’s one lesson you learn from meeting the FLOTUS, it’s that you never ask a lady her age). Sasha and Malia’s mother responded, “51,” and then Anaiyah reacted with a turned up face. “What does that mean? What’s that look? Say that again. Give her the mic,” MObama said.

“You’re too young for a 51-year-old,” Anaiyah replied. And that answer filled the First Lady with so much delight that she called the kid up from the audience for a big hug.

It’s funny that it took a child’s brutal honesty and undeveloped filter to state the obvious. Obama has lived more than half a century, and she doesn’t look a day over 35.
