One of the hallmarks of kid life is being a little bit sneaky, whether it’s stashing away a few pieces of choice Halloween candy, or sneaking into a neighbor’s back yard to retrieve a stolen baseball. These stealthy adventures may be on the naughty side, but they’re often long-remembered for the thrill of sneaking, even if they’re for pretty trivial reasons.

However, Josh Breaux of Pierre Part, Louisiana, had the best reason to sneak onto a neighbor’s property: the love of man’s (or, in this case, boy’s) best friend.

Hollie Mallet caught Breaux hugging her black Labrador, Duchess, when surveying footage from early May. She posted the video to her Facebook page in hopes of identify the boy who so clearly loved her canine companion.

“One day, we were going through the footage, and I told my husband, ‘You’ve got to see this,’ and he [Josh] came in and gave him a quick hug, and we wanted to find out who he was,” she told ABC News. “We live in small town, so everyone pretty much knows everyone, but we don’t know all the neighborhood kids because we don’t have small children anymore.”

So she posted the video on Facebook with the note:

Attn Neighbors! Anyone know who this sweet little boy is? Every now and then when he rides his bike he will quickly come and love on my dog or play fetch real quick, but always leaves quick like he doesn’t know if he should be here! I’d like to tell him he’s welcome to stay and play, she loves the attention!

The footage of this act of kindness has since gone viral, garnering over three million views.

Pretty quickly Ginger Breaux, Josh’s mother, became aware of the footage making its way around the Internet.

“Josh talks about your dog all the time!” she wrote on Mallet’s Facebook post. “Every time we pass he looks to see if she was sitting where he could see her. Just didn’t know he was doing things like this. Last night when I first saw it, I was torn as a momma being happy and upset because he knows he shouldn’t be on someone’s property, but I wake up this morning more happy that he just absolutely adores dogs so much.”

Josh’s affection for Dutchess turned out to have a heartbreaking reason behind it: the Breaux family’s dog Bella, who had been in Josh’s life since he was a little boy, had recently died.

Mallet, of course, is happy to have Dutchess fill that void.

“My dog is super friendly and loves to play,” Mallet told ABC News. “With my husband and I at work all day, it’s great for him to come and find her to play. Every day since, he’s been coming back, and he’s been playing with her, and it’s so fun to check the video at the end of the day to watch them.”

This is adorable. We are so glad Dutchess and Josh found one another! Of course, now the dog owners amongst us want to get a camera to watch our puppy. Who knows which children are showering our pets with affection?
