New Letter by Princess Diana Reveals She Felt Isolated From Royal Family
A new letter written by Princess Diana has surfaced (the message was to her beloved friend Dudley Poplak) and offers more insight into the princess's feelings of alienation and isolation from the royal family.
The note was written on December 3, 1991 - the very same year that she revealed royal secrets to her biographer, Andrew Morton. When the biography, Diana: Her True Story - in Her Own Words, was published in 1992, it quickly became an international bestseller. It also led to a family feud; Queen Elizabeth later referred to 1992 as her "annus horribilis."
Diana's urge to share intimate details of the royals, behind the curtain, beyond biography, is evident in the text of her letter to Poplak. "I do feel extremely isolated more than ever now, as I see what's coming to this country and this family," she wrote.
The late princess also referenced participating in a "self-development program," which helped her understand the suffering of those much less fortunate, "in hospices or in the street."
The tone of the letter, while introspective, is marked by despair, lightened only, writes Diana, by Dudley's friendship. "I feel that you believe in me, Dudley, and you've no idea what this means to me as I am continuously misunderstood by those around me," she continued. The note was penned after a lunch with Dudley and a few other friends, a ritual she hoped to continue in the new year, when life wasn't so "fast and furious."
Chris Albury, a representative from Dominic Winter Auctioneers of Cirencester believes the letter is particularly important because of when it was written. "It was written only months before all the public falling out following the Morton biography," he told the Daily Mail. "She was about to let a genie out of the bottle which could change her life for better or worse."
A window into Diana's inner thoughts is as equally heartbreaking as it is rare. The letter will go up for auction on January 25 and is expected to sell for close to $1,000 in the UK. You can read the full text below:
Dearest Dudley,
I did so enjoy our lunch today - it was special for many reasons and in particular our conversation towards the end of our delicious meal.
I do feel extremely isolated more than ever now, as I see whats coming to this country and this family.
During the last couple of years I have been through a self-development programme which has brought a deep understanding of those who suffer and those who need love and support, wherever its in hospices or in the street.
I feel that you believe in me, Dudley, and you've no idea what this means to me as I am continuously misunderstood by those around me.
Please may we continue our conversation in January, when the pace of life isn't so fast and furious, as I'd care to ask for your advice and relay to you my inner thoughts.
You are a very dear and special friends, Dudley, & what a happy foursome it was for lunch today - I enjoyed Peter's/Ian's sense of humour enormously!!
