Let’s Take a Moment to Review Where Meghan Markle Was This Weekend

After eager anticipation, Meghan Markle attended some—but not all—of Pippa Middleton’s wedding.

In the months and weeks leading up to Pippa Middleton’s wedding, one question whipped up near-feverish speculation. Would Meghan Markle be invited—and ultimately attend—the quasi-royal wedding? First, it was reported that Prince Harry’s girlfriend had been invited to the reception but not to the ceremony. Then, a couple weeks ago, it was reported that Markle had indeed been invited to both parts of the day. Alas, in the end, Markle attended only the reception, albeit while slipping in practically unseen.

To some, this may have come as a disappointment, or even as a small slight. But while Prince Harry and Markle are clearly very serious about their relationship, even an invitation to the reception breaks the general “no ring, no bring” rule, which is so often applied at British society weddings. What’s more, according to English custom, it’s not uncommon for some guests to be invited only to the wedding reception, but not to the ceremony itself.

Prince Harry, for his part, did attend the church ceremony as well. He was seen walking to the church with his older brother, Prince William (presumably while Kate Middleton dealt with their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte). After the ceremony, which began at around 11:30 a.m., guests had a chunk of time before they were due to arrive at chez Middleton. It was then that Prince Harry, chivalrous boyfriend that he is, made a well-documented 100-mile round-trip drive to retrieve Ms. Markle. Once the couple reached the reception, they were reportedly seated at separate tables. Together but apart, at least for the time being.
