Train trips are romantic any time of year, but in the fall, surrounded by all that colorful foliage, they’re even better. Amtrak is well aware of that magic, and in a move that will bring smiles to many train fans’ faces, it is reviving its Autumn Express again this year.

The one-weekend-only special event has been extremely popular in the past (usually selling out quickly), and this year, the charter train is even more attractive because of the route’s cool history.

On October 24 and 25, the Autumn Express will depart from Albany-Rensselaer and Schenectady stations and chug up to Deerfield, Massachusetts, on a historic route not used by passenger trains for 30 years. Train fans take note: It will glide through the remarkable Hoosac Tunnel, which was a big engineering feat back when it was built in 1877…and which some say is haunted.

The day trip includes a boxed lunch and a souvenir tote, plus all the leaf-peeping the Northeast has to offer, as the train passes through eastern New York, southwestern Vermont, and Massachusetts’ Berkshires region.
