Kendall Jenner’s Mango Campaign Is Causing Major Controversy

Yesterday, Kendall Jenner revealed herself as one of the new faces of Mango, joining Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss in helping revive the high street brand that’s been lacking for some time now.

But while the campaign’s a great win for the 20-year-old model, her casting comes with a bit of controversy. The spring 2016 collection that Jenner is fronting is called “Tribal Spirit” and is inspired by the African savanna (despite looking a lot more bohemian and Western).

And while Jenner’s arguably earned her spot as one of the industry’s top models, and a viable choice for any campaign, some people are upset that Mango picked a woman that’s not African to model this particular line.

After the announcement was made, there were cultural appropriation outcries across social media about a white model representing African heritage.

“Why is a white girl modeling African-themed clothes?” one fan commented on Jenner’s Instagram post, revealing her new gig.

Mango’s by no means the first brand to find itself in hot water over similar issues. Valentino faced backlash last year after sending only white models in dreadlocks down an African-inspired runway.

And Kendall’s sister Kylie faced a huge amount of criticism last year after continuing to wear her hair in cornrows despite cultural appropriation accusations.
