Do Kaley Cuoco’s Shoes Belong on the Red Carpet?

You know athleisure has reached its peak when designer sneakers make an appearance on an awards show red carpet.

At the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night, Kaley Cuoco wore a dress from Australian designer Manning Cartel with sequins and cleavage-baring sheer detailing. And, in a styling twist worthy of a shiny statue, she paired the pretty party piece with shoes more fit for the gym than a step-and-repeat.

Sure, the PCAs certainly isn’t the Oscars (meaning cutouts and short hemlines aren’t just appropriate, they’re promoted), yet sneakers still seem out of place. But, funny enough, even though the Big Bang Theory star seemingly could have plucked the geriatric-looking footwear from her grandmother’s closet, it turns out they’re couture.

The Dior Fusion sneaker is, according to the product’s description, an essential embroidered sneaker that “represents the perfect fusion between the exceptional craftsmanship of Dior and the urban world of Raf Simons.” And while the technical fabric and rubber sole might make the fancy flats seem like they’re ready to strap into a SoulCycle bike, they’re strictly for the “leisure” — not the “athletic” — part of “athleisure,” Retailing at $1,140 and covered in crystal embroidery, the Dior Fusions technically have no business calling themselves sneakers.

So maybe Cuoco wasn’t so crazy to wear them on the red carpet after all. But perhaps she should try some high heels for the Golden Globes. Just a thought!
