Joanna Gaines Just Spilled the Worst Mistake She Ever Made During a Renovation

From Country Living

Every time a new episode of HGTV's Fixer Upper comes on, we know we're about to fall head-over-heels in love with Chip and Joanna Gaines' latest renovation. But, of course, everyone makes mistakes from time to time-even Joanna (gasp!).

During their first ever Facebook live chat, Chip and Joanna were challenged to name a project that didn't go as planned. Chip fielded the question to his design expert wife, who bashfully admitted that coming up with new ideas wasn't as easy when she first started off as a designer. Instead, she relied on a whole lot of trial and error-which is how she accidentally painted a house neon yellow.

Joanna explained that the mistake happened when she attempted to "spread her wings" on a fixer upper, but only had a $20,000 budget. After spending $11,000 to paint the house in what she thought was a shade of buttercream yellow, Joanna showed up to find an alarming school-bus yellow exterior instead. "When I pulled up to the house, the neighbors were looking at me shaking their heads," she explained. The Gaineses had to repaint the house, of course, spending the rest of their budget.

Luckily, Chip and Joanna can now look back on the whole ordeal and laugh. "I mean, they wanted to kick her out of the homeowners association," added Chip, happy to poke fun at his wife.

If there's one thing the situation taught Joanna, it's to never rely on small paint swatches. Now, she paints a sample of the exterior to see if she likes the color before committing to it.

In the interview, Joanna also revealed that her family and gardening are her top sources of inspiration. Watch the full interview for more fun facts, like whether they'd ever expand their business outside Waco:
