Jessica Simpson Isn’t Down With Fat-Shamers

Jessica Simpson, like many woman in Hollywood, has been no stranger to criticism about her weight. But in a refreshing segment on the Today show on Friday, the 34-year-old proves that she takes it all in stride.

“I’ve been all kinds of sizes,” the fun-loving mother of two told Matt Lauer. And of her most recent weight loss, which she attributes to Weight Watchers, Simpson said: “I just feel more comfortable in my skin.” And that feeling was clear, as she radiated in a skin-tight floral print Dolce & Gabbana dress.

While she admits that the slew of negative comments about her ever-changing weight have, in fact, bothered her—she’s human, after all!—Simpson says she refused to indulge naysayers. Not only did she not want to give them power, but she also did not want to encourage unrealistic standards that society (read: Hollywood) impose on people. (Daisy Duke days aren’t forever, y’all!)

“It just wasn’t really my priority to please the public and make them feel like I’m supposed to be looking like I did when I was 25,” she admitted. “But if anything I just wanted to be champion for other women and say I can do this.”

Simpson isn’t the first celebrity to be the punching bag for body-shamers. And she isn’t the first to stand up for herself either. When British TV personality Katie Hopkins recently went on Entertainment Tonight and called Kelly Clarkson “a chunky monkey,” the singer defended herself in an interview with Heat magazine. Demi Lovato has also fended off the haters on Twitter.

Kudos to Simpson, and women like Clarkson and Lovato, for rising above vicious comments, spreading messages of self-acceptance, and for not being afraid to be—gasp—human!
