J.Crew Uses “Timeless” Supermodels to Silence Haters

J.Crew really wants you to know, “We hear you.” After months of fending off pissed off customers—not to mention the uber interested press—the company is finally starting their long-promised journey back to basics. “This is what timeless looks like,” reads the blog post announcing their fall catalog, starring a string of familiar faces.

With the help of IMG—which appears to be taking over the world—the brand cast Lauren Hutton, Erin Wasson, Liya Kebede, Amber Valetta, Joan Smalls, Andreea Diaconu, and Carolyn Murphy in their October style guide. Together, the women have appeared more than 50 times over the past 20 years, which means the most diehard J.Crew fans, those dreaming of pleat-front khakis and pastel polo shirts, should be comforted by their presence. Maybe wool culottes won’t look so intimidating if they’re on the same person who was modeling plaid shirts in 1991, is not a totally crazy line of thinking.

The clothes, while preppy, are significantly less fashion forward than J.Crew’s spring/summer collection. Toggle coats, crisp white button downs, a tie, loafers, stripes—everything you need to build the ultimate wasp wardrobe for fall. But there’s still fashion: a plaid cape, bedazzled flats, the aforementioned culottes. All on models who’ve posed for everything from Versace to Chanel.

For anyone missing the old J.Crew, it’s a turn in the right direction. For anyone not, don’t worry—they’re still presenting at New York Fashion Week tomorrow.
