You might have missed the new (and extended) 50 Shades of Grey trailer that debuted during last night’s 72nd Golden Globe Awards. If you did, you missed a scandalous sneak peek with a whole lot of grey! Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, looks as dapper as he did wearing a Louis Vuitton tux at last night’s Globes.

Dornan does at least 5 outfit changes in the 60 second trailer alone. Not surprisingly, he wears mostly grey, with the occasional navy or brown suit. Regardless of the color, Mr. Grey generally appears in a one-button, peak lapel jacket, indicating that he is confident, distinctive, and incredibly stylish.

The one-button suit has made few appearances on the silver screen, making Mr. Grey a new kind of style icon. Here, we take a look back at the actors who have redefined suit style through their iconic characters and undeniable coolness.

The Shawl Lapel: Sean Connery, From Russia with Love (1963)

The shawl lapel, or roll collar, stemmed from the Victorian smoking jacket, and was reimagined by Bond in the 1960s as the quintessential tuxedo jacket. Typically worn for black tie events and red carpet appearances, it is understated yet gentlemanly.

The Four-Button Suit: The Beatles, Hard Days Night (1964)

The four-button suit has been deemed dated and unfashionable, but 1964’s Hard Days Night showed us otherwise. This jacket may be a challenge to wear, but it looks so cool worn open and with an appropriate sweater that it’s worth trying out.

Double-Breasted Suit: Michael Caine, Get Carter (1971)

Michael Caine’s character, Jack Carter, was a badass, cold-blooded gangster who was composed and business-like no matter what crime he was committing. And the double-breasted suit is exactly that. Traditionally characterized as “yachty,” the DB jacket is now considered a timeless staple. Thanks Michael Caine.

The Classic Two-Button, Notch-Lapel: Christian Bale, American Psycho (2000)

Although Christian Bale’s character was a “psycho-killer,” he was extremely well-groomed and had a calculated approach to style. The two-button, typically notch lapel jacket, is classic and suitable for most business affairs. Pair it with statement shoes or a long wool coat.

The Three-Piece Suit: Gabriel Macht, Suits (2013)

The show’s male fans have learned a lot from Gabriel Macht’s character, Harvey Specter on how to dress. He speaks assertively, and so does the three-piece suit. Sure to make a powerful impression in meetings or on the street, it’s a uniform that will guarantee authority and sophistication.

Plenty more of Mr. Grey to come.
