Carrie Fisher started off her acting career with Star Wars, and now, she’ll end it just the same way. She’s played the role of Princess General Leia from 1977 all the way to the present, and we’ll next see her on the big screen in next year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. Though Carrie is gone, her iconic role will never be forgotten, whether in our galaxy, or the Star Wars one.

As thousands millions of tributes and messages began pouring in for Carrie, the latest Star Wars director, J.J. Abrams, shared his love for the lady behind Leia on Twitter. Abrams, who directed The Force Awakens, posted a touching, hand-written note (that’s his signature communication tactic) on Twitter.

Abram’s message reads:

You didn’t need to meet Carrie Fisher to understand her power. She was just as brilliant as beautiful, tough and wonderful, incisive and funny as you could imagine. What an unfair thing to lose her. How lucky to have been blessed with her at all.

For Episode VIII, Abrams has handed over the directing reins to Rian Johnson, who also shared his love for the gone-too-soon Carrie:

This is an incredibly sad time, and we can’t seem to stop our hearts from breaking over, and over, again. So much love to the Star Wars family, and beyond.
