J.Crew Has a Brilliant Plan to Sell Three Times More Shirts

The past few years have been, notoriously, not easy on J.Crew. While the media narrative’s been focused on slumping sales and supposed Jenna Lyons censure, the brand itself has been, admirably, continuing to do what it does best — namely, making fashion-forward basics that blow most mall buys out of the water (hello, everything on The Always List).

On our latest troll through J.Crew’s best and brightest, we spotted something…interesting. To promote its Boy Shirt, J.Crew styled a model in not one, not two, but three of the shirts, layered one atop the other in a rainbow of colors, like a beautiful fashion Gobstopper.

Here, J.Crew proves the look is fly in arty black and white, too. The question that immediately pops to mind is, of course, “what gives?” Is this J.Crew’s genius plan to sell three times more shirts, by creating a worldwide mania for the triple-layered lewk?

Or is it J.Crew’s tribute to the Abercrombie bros of yore, when one flaunted one’s wealth, status, and flip-cup skills by wearing no fewer than two pastel polo shirts at all times, accessorized by Ray Bans by day, Kanye-style shutter shades by night?

Or, is it J.Crew’s loving tribute to the classic Friends moment, when Joey clapped back at Chandler’s underwear theft by wearing literally every item Chandler owns? Only J.Crew knows for sure. But admit it — you’d at least consider this next-level look at your next board meet.
