Is Male-Polish the Latest Meterosexual Trend?

Just when you thought that men’s grooming had hit levels of ridiculousness—from the rise of the lumbersexual (those flannel-wearing dudes with impeccable moustaches and coiffed Macklemore haircuts) to New York Knicks’ center player, Amare Stoudemire’s red wine baths—not to get drunk, but to rejuvenate his skin. Alas, there’s yet another manscaping trend that has been embraced by the California “cool guys” like pro-skater Dylan Rieder: nail polish.

Coincidentally, Rieder’s sponsored skateboarding brand, HUF recently collaborated with NCLA beauty products to create the first-ever nail polish designed specifically for men. Though Rieder’s not the only athlete who fancies polish. HUF x NCLA’s nail lacquer, “Craig’s Black Lust” named after the pro-surfer Craig Anderson, is just a regular jet-black nail polish—but for guys.

NCLA’s CEO, Daniel Roescheisen described the marriage of Cali skate and surf culture with beauty as an organic pairing. “So many trends are born within the skate and surf culture before they go mainstream. We thought that there’s nothing better than to come out with a product that carries the vibe of that culture—edgy, cool, and unique—just like our brand,” Roescheisen explained.

Of course, we’ve seen painted nails on grunge rockers and metal heads like Kurt Cobain and Metallica. And even a decade later on the red carpet, cheekily sported by Johnny Depp and Jared Leto (carrying that kind-of druggy, hard-edged look).

Don’t get me wrong, Craig Anderson is a great looking guy, but he’s no Johnny Depp. “We’ll see how many brave males are out there,” Roescheisen said.
