Madonna & Terrence Howard Survive the Apocalypse in "Ghosttown"

Imagine this: a year from now, a nuclear blast leaves Manhattan looking like a set from The Walking Dead minus the zombies, and everyone is pretty much a goner. Well, pretty much everyone except Madonna, which is realistic when you think of how Madge has been able to maintain a freakishly long career. (The other survivors include a cute kid, a wolf, a tarantula, and Lucious Lyon aka Terrence Howard.) The aforementioned twisted fantasy comes alive in Madonna’s video for “Ghosttown,” a shadowy stripped-down ballad from her new LP, Rebel Heart. The Jonas Akerlund-directed video kicks off with a depressed Madonna laying on a dirty mattress in her moodily-lit boudoir which features a lit chandelier on a sofa and a fancy vanity set. The star kisses a framed photo of her IRL-deceased mother and then throws on some gothic rosaries and her wind-machine-friendly emerald cape to take a stroll outside to get some fresh toxic air while wearing Miu Miu thigh-highs. Although Madonna wasn’t able to save her loved ones, she clearly saved some makeup, fantastic flowing extensions (courtesy of Andy Lecompte), and a killer (B. Akerlund-styled) outfit.

The reinvention queen is serving all sorts of old school ring leader-ish sartorial vibes à la Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd, Brad Pitt in Interview With the  Vampire, and Elsa in American Horror Story: Freak Show, courtesy of labels like Chrome Hearts, Greg Lauren, and Agent Provocateur. But can we actually talk about Madonna’s iconic gap tooth gilded grill? It magically appears after she attempts to make a collect call in a burnt down phone booth before collapsing then dramatically rolling around in soot (because Bitch, It’s Madonna, and this must be the first time she’s come in contact with a phone booth). She eventually picks herself up and uses a golf club to take out her aggression on a stack of wooden chairs. The racket gets Terrence Howard’s attention, so he pulls out his rifle and gets all witch hunt-y. It takes a moment for Howard to realize that he has to surrender to the Queen of Pop. They then decide to go all Dancing With The Stars on us, because why not, and the cute boy is their only audience member. The video closes with the trio holding hands like one big happy family and taking another stroll through the flames as if they’re the ghost town royals. Even in the apocalypse, Madonna reigns supreme.
