How to DIY Gigi Hadid’s Patchwork Denim Pants

I’ve been a DIY denim queen since I was old enough to pick up a pair of scissors. (I’m a ‘90s baby after all!). As a teenager, my weekends were spent sifting through vintage vendors at the local swap meet. After finding the perfect Levi’s amidst a musky pile of pants, I’d take them back to my crafts corner for the royal treatment—tearing ‘em, distressing ‘em, and embellishing ‘em. The repurposed bottoms, once trash, became treasures under my tutelage and I would then resell them to friends or on consignment at boutiques as if they were couture.

So when I saw Gigi Hadid step out of her car while in Paris, France in a pair of black skinnies with two knee patches — a red heart on one and a gold star on the other — I was reminded of my teenage trade and felt compelled to share that you, too, can wear your heart (and star?) on your sleeve. (Did I say knee?)

It’s likely that her pants actually cost a pretty penny, but that doesn’t mean yours have to. Here’s how:

Step 1: Pick a pair of simple jeans. They don’t have to be black. Like these from H&M. Or these. Or these.

Step 2: Play with patches. Pick two, and like in Gigi’s case, opposites attract. Play it safe and choose a heart and a star like hers. Or, pick two that speak to you. Like this goth-punk wicca eye or this retro ‘70s daisy.

Step 3: Mark the placement with a pencil (it’ll wash out!) and superglue away. There are also iron-on options that work just as well.

Grab a camel coat, your biggest, blackest sunglasses and sleek boots. Now you’re one step closer to stealing Gigi’s Parisian style. Au revoir!
