How Guys Like Trevor Noah and Paul Rudd Stand Out on the Crazy Met Gala Red Carpet

Dressing for the Met Gala isn’t easy. Not only is it black tie — sorry, “Tech White Tie” — but there’s also a theme and an approval process (rumor has it, Anna Wintour and Vogue staffers have the final say). While the pressure’s mostly on the women to walk the red carpet in gorgeous gowns adhering to specific parameters, the men have much to contend with too. For those not named Justin Bieber, who can pull off a dragon-adorned jacket like it’s no big deal, traditional men’s tailors provide guests with striking ensembles. For 2016, Ermenegildo Zegna dressed Trevor Noah, Paul Rudd, Edgar Ramirez, and more — once and for all proving that suits don’t always have to be stuffy.

For Noah, who wears a suit night after night as host of The Daily Show, the Met’s an opportunity for him to wear something different (as evidenced by the fact that he chose a white tuxedo jacket for last year’s affair). So his stylist, Shannon Turgeon, got him something special. “I knew all along that I wanted to try something with both classic and modern details,” she tells Yahoo Style. “We like to have fun with Trevor’s event looks and go in different directions each time to keep things new.”

The comedian’s look, from Zegna Made to Measure (which is a completely personalized service, where every detail and stitch is carefully selected to match the character and personality of the individual), is made of a navy blue wool fabric that has a diamond pattern woven into it. “The fabric feels very modern and somewhat futuristic between the sheen of the silk and the texture of the weave,” she explains. “We looked through nearly a hundred swatches and unanimously decided it was perfect.”

To complete the look, Turgeon had the hard choice of deciding between a white or dark-colored shirt. “Originally we weren’t sure if white was the right shirting color because we see him in that nightly on The Daily Show,” she says. Because of this, the team was leaning toward an option that was monochromatic and dark for the event. “But once we saw the final look all together, we all knew that the white shirt not only gave the right contrast between the colors of the suit, but really made it pop, which will be great on the red carpet.” For an extra special touch, Turgeon added a vintage platinum and diamond tie tack from the ’20s “because if there’s anywhere a man can add an accessory, it’s the Met Ball.”

Noah’s not the only one breaking away from the classic. Paul Rudd, who’s styled by Michael Fisher, is wearing Ermenegildo Zegna Couture. Of Rudd’s “very on-theme” look, Fisher noted that he really “liked the broken suit jacket and pant combo” because of its handmade and old-world feel. “Whenever I style a formal look, I like to push it as much as possible and not do the ‘classic tux’ thing,” he added.

For Ramirez, who had a breakout year, starring in Joy with Jennifer Lawrence and in the reboot of Point Break, classic isn’t a bad thing — especially when it comes to tailoring. The actor — who was set up with Ermenegildo Zegna Couture by his stylist, Dani Michelle — kept it cool in a double-breasted tuxedo. “When making decisions for any red carpet, especially the esteemed Met Gala, we want to make sure every detail is polished and perfected,” Michelle says. “We completed the look with metal shirt studs and a Cartier watch as a nod to the theme of fashion in an age of technology. Edgar and I look to honor the glamour of old Hollywood and the classic silhouettes of men’s suiting at every opportunity.”
