How Caitlyn Jenner Chose That White Versace Dress for the ESPYs

Caitlyn Jenner looked impeccable in the body-hugging, white Versace dress she wore for her big night receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage last week at the ESPYs — that much we knew. Something we didn’t know? The story behind how she picked the look, which she’d apparently been fretting over since the second the honor was first announced back in early June.

Monday, the former athlete and current reality TV star and LGBTQ advocate took to her blog to explain her process of choosing the gown — and it sounds like a freaking fashion lover’s dream, if you ask us.

Writes Jenner, “Over the last month, I was so worried about what to wear. Donatella Versace reached out to me and said, ‘I want to do the dress.’ I said, ‘I am SO in.’”

Versace them created a custom dress specifically for her. “We started with designs; they made the dress in Italy. [Donatella’s] head dressmaker came over and we did two fittings to make sure we got it just absolutely perfect. It was like every fantasy of my life come true.”

Jenner also says that, although she finally feeling comfortable in her own skin, the dress, itself, wasn’t quite what you’d call ‘cozy’: “Getting glamorous for the ESPYs was a big process to go through, but it was amazing and so much fun. I really wanted to feel real comfortable up there (although there was a corset under that dress, so I don’t know how comfortable I was!). I wanted to feel good. I wanted to feel pretty. I wanted to be myself.” So maybe she won’t be joining Kim and Khloe in their waist training endeavors anytime soon?

But, despite how elegant she looked onstage, Jenner still wasn’t completely satisfied with one part of her appearance at the ESPYs — her voice, which she says hasn’t quite transitioned as much as she’d like.

“While I felt like I looked great and that the gown looked fabulous, I still have a voice issue,” she explains. “It’s not quite right compared to my feminine appearance. That bothers me a little bit. However, I hope that people don’t listen to the pitch of my voice, but listen to what I have to say. That’s important to me.”
