San Francisco is known for having pet-friendly hotels, but one boutique spot in Union Square is getting attention for going so far as to have a sign in the lobby welcoming them over some humans.

The kicker is, the hotel doesn’t know how the sign got there.

The sign posted by “The Management” is hard to miss if you’re in the small lobby of the Cartwright Hotel next to its only elevator. It’s near the dog and cat treats the hotel staff puts out every day and includes the following:

“Dogs are welcome in this hotel. We never had a dog that smoked in bed and set fire to the blankets. We never had a dog that stole our towels and played the TV too loud, or had a noisy fight with his traveling companion… So if your dog can vouch for you, you’re welcome too.”

If you’re a human guest, this sign reminds you to behave.

Steve Viscio, general manager of the Cartwright, told Yahoo Travel his inbox was flooded with emails in the last 24 hours, since a photo of the sign went viral on social media. He also said no guests have complained about the sign, which is simply a lighthearted show of affection for pets. The hotel doesn’t charge a fee for guests with pets.

Viscio said the sign has been there for about two years, but who exactly put it there is anyone’s guess.

“We have no idea who came up with the sign,” he told Yahoo Travel. “One of our guest service agents at the front desk is a dog lover like no other. She thought the revenue manager found it and put it there. He thought she did it. We think maybe it might have come from Pinterest. But nobody’s 100 percent sure.”

And, just for the record, humans are allowed to stay at the hotel without a pet’s approval.
