These are all the horror movies you should watch on Netflix in October (if you dare)

The list of reasons we’re looking forward to October is so long that we’ve written an embarrassing amount of articles covering the topic. It’s the first REAL month of the fall season, and (almost) everywhere in the country is settling into a few months of brisk weather, beautiful autumn foliage, cozy sweaters, and strolling about in your favorite tall boots.

WE KNOW, it’s literally the best. (Condolences to fellow Angelenos. The definition of purgatory is experiencing the same thing day after day. No idea why more people aren’t catching on to the fact that Hades is presiding over the weather here, but we digress…)

Yet, one of the best things about October is DEFINITELY scary movies. And we are HERE FOR YOU, people. Here’s a list of the best scary movies on Netflix, guaranteed to give you the heebie-jeebies.

Don’t forget to turn off the lights and ask your family members or roommates to warn you before they come home so they don’t scare the bejesus out of you while they’re unlocking the door.

1. They Look Like People (2015)

While visiting an old friend in New York City, a man begins receiving eerie phone calls that warn him something evil is about to happen. This sounds horrifying and we’re already hiding under the blankets and refusing to ever charge our smartphones ever again.

2. The Amityville Horror (2005)

On the upside, there’s young Ryan Reynolds in this. On the downside, it’s about newlyweds moving into a large house where a mass murder was committed, and experiencing strange manifestations which drive them away. (Hard pass on haunted houses, thanks.)

3. The Human Centipede (2009)

If you don’t know what this movie is about, STOP HERE. DO NOT GOOGLE, DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200. Please, spare yourself ever knowing what this movie is about. If you already know what it’s about, go ahead and watch it. Your life can’t get any worse.

4. Would You Rather (2013)

This is exactly what it sounds like. A horrible game of “would you rather” that gets increasingly scary as it goes. Nope nope nope nope nope.

5. Hush (2016)

A rare horror film that was actually a critical success. It’s about a young, deaf author who lives alone in the woods… and you can use your imagination to figure out where it goes from there.

6. Scream 2 (1997)

Like the original, but with more gore.

7. The Lazarus Effect (2015)

Olivia Wilde gets brought back from the dead by some scientists, and everything goes to hell in a handbasket. (Can you tell we’re not cut out for horror? Nobody who gets along with scary movies uses phrases like ‘hell in a handbasket.’)

8. The Awakening (2011)

A hoax debunker ends up at a legitimately haunted boarding school. We’re figuring she can’t really debunk this.

9. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

A case of Alzheimer’s turns out to be a case of seriously demonic possession. As if Alzheimer’s isn’t scary in and of itself — they had to add demons. Great.

10. The Nightmare (2015)

This one’s actually a documentary about sleep paralysis, and the truly unsettling things people think they see when they half wake up. Much like the title, this will deeeeefinitely make you reluctant to go to bed afterwards.
