Demi Lovato Wore a Sexy Sheath to a Hillary Clinton Rally in Iowa

Since Demi Lovato gained confidence last summer, she has shed layers — literally and figuratively. Her onstage outfits mostly consist of crop tops and high-waisted booty shorts, and her red carpet looks include cutouts and bare cleavage. But on Thursday, the singer stumped for Hillary Clinton in a red dress fit for a lady on a presidential campaign — but still didn’t abandon her sexy new style of dress.

Invited by the Democratic candidate to help win over young women and millennial voters in Iowa where opponent Bernie Sanders is gaining ground, Lovato spoke about Clinton’s competence to a crowd of fans at the University of Iowa. For the occasion, she opted for a bouclé sheath with a deep V-neck — almost the pop-star version of her compatriot’s power suit. The hemline was appropriate, hitting below the knee, and she paired the piece with matching pumps and red statement lip color. “I don’t think there’s a woman more confident than Hillary Clinton,” the artist said, referencing the name of her 2015 album and hit song. Before performing that very number for 1,600 supporters, she added that the politician “completely embodies the concept of women empowerment.”

The flattery went both ways: “She is using her voice not only to sing and inspire us through that — she’s using her voice to reach out to so many people who need a little bit of help themselves,” Clinton said of the 23-year-old.

Lovato isn’t the first female influencer to join Clinton on the campaign trail. Lena Dunham went to New Hampshire and Iowa, the first states to hold their primaries and caucuses respectively. For her time away from Hollywood, the Girls star wore her support on her sleeve — quite literally. Dunham, in collaboration with her stylist, Shirley Kurata, put on dresses, knits, and blazers in patriotic colors and added Clinton’s logo. “Clothes can definitely be a political campaign tool,” Kurata told Vogue of the themed outfits. “With the popularity of Instagram, you can relay a political statement in a visual way that can access so many people — that wasn’t possible before social media.”

Of the HRC celebrity sisterhood, Lovato was actually the only one who did not create a custom Hillary outfit for her campaign appearance (a red, off-the-rack dress definitely doesn’t count). Katy Perry, who performed “America the Beautiful,” “Firework,” “Wide Awake,” and “Roar” in Iowa, was possibly even more committed than Dunham. Onstage, she wore a white strapless gown with a Clinton logo pin, a flag cape, and a red, white, and blue turban. She also had #ImWithHer nail art and “POTUS” jewelry.
