Gucci's Alessandro Michele Goes Global With A Delightful Mishmash of Influences
When designer Alessandro Michele was appointed creative director of Gucci, the fashion world was a bit surprised by a virtual unknown taking over a multibillion dollar company. Now the fashion world is asking: Where have you been Mr Michele? Gucci’s Spring/ Summer 2016 collection was another inspired triumph of beautiful craftsmanship, luxurious materials and a treasure trove of influences. The 42 year-old designer spanned the globe and the cultural landscape to create a spectacular collection of dreamy but totally wearable clothes. While many designers make arcane and inane references (the films of Fassbinder, global warming) Michele seems to be a just a little more thoughtful —and frankly fun— in his influences: Hollywood starlets, exotic arts and antiques, imaginary maps of the world. Here’s to putting the fantasy back in fashion.
