Okay, so we knew that the new Ghostbusters movie was popular and everything (even though it’s received a lot of nasty hate), but apparently we didn’t realize the full extent of this cultural phenomenon.

Retail giant Mattel released a series of action figures for the four main lady characters; Abby, Erin, Jillian, and Patty played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones and sales have been going through the roof!

According to Joe Lawandus, senior VP of design and marketing for Mattel’s Toy Box, the creative team are “thrilled” with the positive response to the Ghostbusters figures. He told Variety, “We worked closely with Sony to ensure each figure featured authentic details from the movie including a wearable proton pack. The early momentum shows the product is resonating with ‘Ghostbusters’ fans!”

And here’s the best part

Both girls and boys are buying the action figures! Mattel was smart in their sales strategy, because they actually placed the female figures in the boys’ toy aisle.

The message of the Ghostbusters is that girls and women can kick serious ass in science (and beyond), so it’s great to see that children are connecting with the film in such a welcoming way, and then seeking out the merchandise.

(Incidentally, girls kick serious ass in all professions every day, so basically the film is just stating the glaringly obvious in a hysterical way!)

As well as the female action figures selling well, Variety notes that the Ecto vehicle and proton pack are also popular.

As far as the actual film and how well it performed, Ghostbusters grossed $62 million domestically in its first six days. So yeah, all in all, pretty good.
