Frank Ocean didn’t choose “Nikes” for his very first State Dinner – he opted for Vans instead!

The rapper slipped on black and white checkered Vans sneakers to the POTUS-hosted black-tie event honoring Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Mrs. Agnese Landini of Italy on Tuesday.

“First time doing it, probably because it’s my first time here,” Ocean, 28, told reporters as to why he opted for his casual $50 shoes.

Along with his effortlessly cool sneakers, he opted for a white dress shirt with black suit and trousers. As for his date, the singer/songwriter brought his mother Katonya Breaux, who looked radiant in a strapless magenta gown.

And on what he was looking forward to in the night, Ocean said, “asking Obama if he had fun, just congratulating him also.”

Meanwhile, the First Lady looked dazzling in a floor length, rose gold chainmail gown designed by Atelier Versace. Italy’s prime minister Renzi wore an Armani tuxedo and his wife opted for a Ermanno Scervino dress.

Other notable musicians at the star-studded event were James Taylor, Blake Shelton and Chance the Rapper, who wore Ralph Lauren. Gwen Stefani provided the night’s entertainment.
