The Flamenkini Is Taking Over Beaches in 2016

You know how when you learn a new word, you suddenly seem to hear it everywhere? Fashion trends are like that too. Read a story about how bandanas are a thing, and suddenly you notice that every other girl on Instagram and in your brunch spot is tying one on.

The same can be said for the off-shoulder bikini trend — you know, the ruffled crop top and bikini bottom combo we’re suddenly spotting on celebs from Krysten Ritter to Selena Gomez. (I am officially dubbing this style the “flamenkini” because the flouncy top looks like something a flamenco dancer would wear and because I like a good portmanteau.)

For a month or two now, my co-worker Lauren has been pinging me every time she spots a flamenkini in the wild, with notes like, “This would definitely fall off in the ocean and give you the weirdest tan lines.” And she’s right — the Rosie Assoulin-inspired off-shoulder top isn’t the easiest thing to wear on the street and makes even less sense on the beach, where straps are the only thing standing between you and a very awkward moment. And yet, thanks to designers like Lisa Marie Fernandez and her celeb fans, these suits are quickly becoming ubiquitous — and they seem to get cuter every time we spot one.
