Basquiat’s ‘Cabeza’ + Mexican Sugar Skull = Margiela’s Finale Look
Traditionally in fashion shows, the last look of the evening is a bride, or as they call it in French, “la mariée.” For Galliano’s debut collection for Margiela, the designer sent out a model in red with a mask that seem to be a hybrid of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s outsider street art and that of a Mexican Sugar Skull. The skull, which is a typical offering during the country’s Day of the Dead celebrations, may have not been a casual references. Galliano experienced a kind of “fashion death” back in 2011 and this collection signaled his rebirth.
