Exclusive: Watch Lauren Conrad Prep for Her Runway Show

In two weeks, Lauren Conrad will make her New York Fashion Week debut, showing her Kohl’s collection on a runway for the first time ever (she showed her own, now defunct, line back in 2009). But if the reality TV star cum designer is feeling the pressure, she sure didn’t sound like it when I hopped on the phone with her earlier this week.

“I think this brand has really developed a very strong sense of self in the past five, six years,” she said, on the impetus for doing a runway show. “We’re in a place where we felt really confident displaying the collection this week.”

The show will take place at 7pm on September 9, sandwiched between the likes of Derek Lam and Alexander Wang, and Conrad is the first to admit her label doesn’t immediately spring to mind when you think runway show.  “I think it’s really exciting to take a line and put in an environment it hasn’t traditionally been seen in,” she said. As for if she sees New York Fashion Week moving in a more contemporary (read: wearable) and affordable direction, Conrad said, “Absolutely.”

“In the last decade this industry has changed a lot,” she said. “Fast fashion has become so important—it’s about that high-low mix. Most editors shop at Zara. It’s become more about the piece and how you put together the outfit, rather than the brand.”

And while you may not be getting a paper invite in the mail—don’t feel too left out. The whole show will be livestreamed at lcrunway.com. “We’ve worked really hard on it and I’m excited to be able to show it to as much people as possible,” said Conrad. “It gives everyone an opportunity to be apart of it—to give them a front row seat, so to speak.” And the best part? All of it will be ready to purchase right off the runway.
