Donald Trump is full of surprises, but at the Congressional Luncheon after the Inauguration today, he did something no one saw coming: honor his opponent in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton.

The former Secretary of State and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, were both at the luncheon, after attending Trump's Inauguration this morning. When the new President stepped up to the podium this afternoon, he took a moment to shout out the Democratic candidate and her spouse. After a heated campaign of mudslinging, the gesture came as a pleasant surprise.

"There is something that I wanted to say, because I was very honored, very very honored, when I heard that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton was [sic] coming today, and I think it's appropriate to say," Trump said at the podium as the attendees started to applaud.

"And I'd like you to stand up," he continued, asking the crowd to give the Clintons a standing ovation as he waved to them from across the room. Melania, Ivanka and Tiffany Trump were among those clapping in the audience.

"And honestly, there's nothing more I can say," he concluded. "Because I have a lot of respect for those two people."

Afterwards, the two shook hands.
