Discuss: Fashion Superstar Malaika Firth in the Urban Outfitters Catalog

Burberry. Valentino. Urban Outfitters?

That’s the latest label using one of fashion’s most famous faces—Malaika Firth—in their newest catalog. The 21-year-old was Prada’s first black model since Naomi Campbell, and has also scored campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger and Marc Jacobs.

So what’s a Vogue regular doing in $49 flannel (besides posing the hell out of it)? She’s making a smart—if unexpected—move for her career. As boundaries between “high” an “low” fashion blur faster than cheap eyeliner, models like Firth are able to cash in on catalog work, while maintaining their style credibility. And though posing in thousands of t-shirts was once a rookie move (as a teen, Cara Delevingne did it for ASOS to learn the ropes…), it’s now becoming just another way to look cool—in Firth’s case, really cool—on the Internet, while getting paid for it.  (After all, Anja Rubik and Karlie Kloss recently did the same thing for UO’s sister label, Free People!) Our prediction: We’ll see Firth on the runway for Louis Vuitton and Altuzarra again this year… but backstage, maybe she’ll be sporting a bit more flannel than usual.
