Most shoppers were perplexed and even annoyed by Topshop’s “mom jeans,” which feature clear panels over the knees. But one designer was intrigued and inspired.
Mother of London, a conceptual bespoke and ready-to-wear fashion brand, just came out with a pair of polar opposite pants — clear “mom jeans” with denim panels — and they’re hilarious. “When the ‘jindows’ were released, a few friends texted them to me,” Mildred Von, who designed the Mother of London version, tells Yahoo Style. “I thought they were ridiculous, but in a good way. I thought they were preposterous and fun. I’d wear them, honestly.” She’s one of the very few.
But then a light bulb went off. “I joked that I would make reverse jindows just to troll,” she says. And voilà: On Monday, Mother of London shared a photo of reverse jindows on Instagram.
The image mirrors the original Topshop shot, with a model kneeling in the pants. The clear plastic pants — save for the denim patches — expose her underwear. “I made clear mom jeans with denim windows because that’s how I choose to use my superpower,” the caption read.
And it gets better when you go to the website. “A troll-wear essential,” the description reads. “Lovingly made in the USA by truly appalled craftspeople. I don’t care. I will die on this hill.” So random, just like the pants.
“Mostly plastic, with some 100% cotton thrown on there.” Sounds about right. “Only five will ever be made. No labels because it’s transparent, also so I can pretend this never happened later.”
The pants aren’t cheap either, costing $900. “People were outraged not only by the jindows but the price,” Von explains. Those DIY-looking pants definitely did not warrant $95. But $900 for some plastic? It’s all in jest, says Von. “So I poked fun with the price as well.”
It’s not entirely a joke, though, because you can actually add them to your cart and purchase them. But that wasn’t the reason Von designed them. When asked if she thought anyone would actually buy them, she said, “I certainly hope not.”
But, believe it or not, she’s already had a few inquiries.
