The creator of “Breaking Bad” is making an HBO show about cults, and this is our new favorite show

No, nothing will ever be as great and perfect as the saga of Walter White over the run of Breaking Bad. But this new show sure sounds close.

Vince Gilligan — the creator, showrunner, head writer, and sometimes director of Breaking Bad (and also, Better Call Saul) — is bringing another TV show to life, this time on HBO. Gone is the science and blue meth; instead, we’re going to get a show about a real-life cult, and we could not be more excited.

According to Deadline, who first broke the news, the show is called Raven, and is based on the the real-life story found in Raven: The Untold Story of Jim Jones and His People. Jim Jones was a cult leader back in 1978, and under his leadership, almost a thousand people committed murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.

The show will tell “the definitive history of Peoples Temple from its idealistic beginnings to its terrible end in Jonestown. The adaptation will focus on Jim Jones but also on his followers, who, by and large, were ordinary people of good will. It tells the mysterious story of how so many of them came to give up their lives for this man.”

Even better, the show is landing on HBO as a limited-series, so you just KNOW this is going to be hella good. Along with Gilligan, he’ll be joined by his long-term producing partner, Michelle MacLaren, AND, Octavia Spencer (who is just producing, not starring but we can hope).

No start date for production, let alone a release date has been set, but start getting excited. And also start clearing your schedule to binge this, beginning to end.
