Collaboration of the Week: Forever 21 x Ron Bass

We love when fashion and art collide to create something great and we can actually afford it!

This collaboration is especially exciting as Brooklyn-based artist Ron Bass began his design journey a mere four years ago by customizing 15 varsity jackets from fast fashion retailer. From this experiment, he went on to establish his own Bass by Ron Bass clothing line inspired by his love of DIY and the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Mark McNairy and Jeremy Scott.  His fans now include Jay Z, Beyoncé, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne, and many more.

We caught up with the artist to talk about the collection, which includes colorful tank tops, T-shirts, hooded jackets, and pants that are perfect for the urban explorer. Hurry up and snap up these pieces before Jay and Bey do!

Yahoo Style: What is your the creative process?

Ron Bass: My creative process is very simple. I close my eyes and pray before I pick up my paintbrush.

YS: How does ’80s graffiti play into your designs?

RB: I’m inspired by the great artists before me such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Harring. Growing up in Brooklyn, art had its way of surrounding me. I remember as a kid being so fascinated by the trains covered in graffiti. The colors were so vibrant.

YS: Are you also inspired by music?

RB: Music is my antidote! There’s something about the sound of instruments that truly makes my heart beat. I don’t think I’ve ever created a piece without listening to music. I love everything from Marvin Gaye to Michael Jackson to Kanye West to James Blake. Depending on how I’m feeling I may even listen to Christmas songs in the middle of June while painting.

YS: How does it feel to be working with F21 on this project since you started with those initial jackets four years ago?

RB: I’m elated! It was great working with Forever 21. I’ve learned so much about logistics and the behind-the-scenes factors of business and branding on a corporate level. It’s truly a dream come true. If you would have told me four years ago that this would have become a reality, I would have laughed and walked away.
