Chelsea Handler Takes Her Nudity Campaign Mainstream
Chelsea Handler has gotten naked on Twitter, Instagram, TV, and definitely in the privacy of her own home. Now she’s taking it all off on a magazine cover with fellow actor Nick Offerman by her side.
Appearing on Esquire’s April 2015 cover, the two show off their backsides for the Women & Men issue. Mimicking John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s image from the 1968 album Two Virgins, the comedians are holding hands and interlocking their toes with their bare butts facing the camera and casually glancing over their shoulders.
The issue is “devoted to the increasingly charged relations between women and men in America,” according to the magazine. And there’s no better way to illustrate that then to show two individuals in their birthday suits. Stripped down and vulnerable, taking away clothes gets down to the core of human interaction.
Handler has been battling on social media to #freethenipple lately and with this she takes her campaign mainstream. While Instagram has censored her chest, Twitter doesn’t seem to mind and she’s posted topless images of herself in Israel, on a camel, at her 40th birthday, and lying on the ground. Offerman isn’t as open on his accounts, but he has stripped down for the camera before in films such as Deadwood and Somebody Up There Likes Me.
Seeing as the tagline says the publication will explore “current difficulties” is our culture, this cover makes perfect sense. Not only does the image seem to indicate the magazine will delve into the double standards surrounding women’s nudity and a a collective squeamishness and sensitivity to seeing anyone uncovered will most likely be addressed, but other societal problems such as gender issues and sexuality as well.
