Chanel Looks Back to the Future for SS17: Stormtroopers, Baseball Caps, and Windows 95 Screen-Saver Prints

The convergence of fashion and technology has produced some pretty cool things: 3D printers can spit out clothes, wearables can track just about anything, dresses tweet, and so much more. But perhaps the chicest — and most meta — use of tech in the sartorial comes courtesy of Chanel’s spring-summer 2017 show that debuted Tuesday morning during Paris Fashion Week.

The French brand’s legendary creative director Karl Lagerfeld took over the Grand Palais and transformed the historic museum into a “cutting-edge” data center (well, the computer processors might not have actually worked, but the flashing lights and colorful cords at least looked pretty).

And not only were the clothes beautiful, they were all also both simultaneously modern and classic. There were bags with flashing lights and blazers made from prints seemingly inspired by Windows 95 screen savers, tweed sets on Cocobots (Chanel stormtrooper-inspired costumes), silk slips with lace trim worn with side ponytails and baseball caps, and more dichotomous combinations.

Front-row attendees clad in Chanel included Courtney Love, her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, Lily-Rose Depp, Usher, and Steve and Marjorie Harvey.
