Our culture is currently experiencing a shift toward inclusiveness, especially as it relates to transgender issues. Shows like Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent, have given a face and a voice to a community that has long remained invisible. Although there’s still a long way to go, we have undeniably made process this past year, and so for it’s 5th anniversary issue, Candy magazine, a “transversal style magazine,” brought together some of the most inspiring, vocal, and visible transgender women in our culture, for an incredible 62-page portfolio: The Role Models.

The magazine, which has featured James Franco, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, and Jared Leto on its cover, went all out with a spectacular pull-out cover, modeled after Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood Issue. It features Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox, who was also the first transgender woman to be on the cover of Time magazine earlier this year, Janet Mock, writer, activist, and contributor to Marie Claire, model Carmen Carrera, and Geena Rocero, a model and founder of Gender Proud, a transgender advocacy and aid organization. Rounding out the group are ten additional women, a mix of models, actresses, writers, and musicians, who come from different backgrounds, but share a desire to help their community gain acceptance in mainstream society. It might be the first magazine to bring all these women together and honor their achievements, but here’s hoping it’s not the last.
