Turn heads at your 4th of July BBQ with the ultimate red, white, and blue dessert. When you cut into this seemingly simple white cake, an American flag in its full and sweet glory is revealed. This high-flying cake belongs to Zainab Storms, also known as the Blahnik Baker. Her blog combines the things she loves most — shoes and baking. And you bet she has you covered for your next party, from gorgeous cocktail and dessert recipes to the perfect outfit. Which brings us to her flag cake.

“Want to know a secret? It’s extremely easy to put together,” she writes. “Don’t be fooled by the beautiful layers, any baker can pull this off in no time.”

To construct this flag she turns to surprise-inside cake queen, I Am Baker’s Amanda Rettke for inspiration. In Storms’ version she makes a batter of her favorite yellow cake recipe and uses strawberry and blueberry purée with a little food coloring to give each layer richer flavor and color. She frosts the outside with a blanket of whipped vanilla buttercream and sprinkles a ring of patriotic sprinkles. The genius to this is no matter where you cut each guest will walk away with a beautiful flag on their plate. For the full step-by-step tutorial head to the Blahnik Baker for a dessert that will make this Independence Day spectacular!
