Boxers Meet Face-to-Face, Suited up

The biggest (and most expensive) fight in the history of boxing is approaching: on May 2nd, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will go face-to-face in Las Vegas to fight for the world champion title. The cost of this highly anticipated clash? $250 million.

When they meet in May, they’ll wear shiny shorts and boxing gloves, but today the duo put on some clothes to make their only public appearance together at a press conference in Los Angeles (8pm GMT) to openly discuss the imminent fight (both Mayweather and Pacquiao declined to appear at the media tour of several cities, which are normally part of the pay-per-view event). Hours before the conference, the two appeared on the red carpet for photo ops, and considering the kind of dough each brings in (Mayweather’s net worth was $280 million in 2014 while Pacquiao’s $100 million), we expected more.

Mayweather, whose style is typically over-the-top—he totes an Hermes bag and drips in diamonds—opted for a boring gray suit, no tie, with matching shoes and a tacky Gucci belt. But that was nothing compared to Pacquiao’s look for the evening. Instead of going monochromatic, the fighter appeared grinning on the red carpet in a wrinkled and checkered dark gray suit with mismatched brown shoes and a tie that looked like red leopard print. Don’t worry, he didn’t forget his statement accessory: a pair of oversized sunglasses that Paris Hilton wore back in 2007.

Although Pacquiao’s look was pretty tragic, his lighthearted, not-in-your-face attitude (unlike Mayweather’s) made up for any fashion mishaps. In fact, we’re even routing for this underdog to take Mayweather’s throne!
