There’s a "Border Wall" Costume and It’s Infuriating

The Internet is pissed about this "border wall" costume to the point that there's an actual petition to remove it from Amazon.

There's never been a shortage of cringe-worthy Halloween costumes. There are ones appropriating Native American culture, those that make fun of overweight people, and just ones that are all around racially insensitive. TBH, we're totally sick of them. And this new costume that's going viral today is right up there with some of the worst of the worst.

Costume Agent's unisex "Border Wall" costume, officially named Trump Mexico Will Pay Zip Up Costume Jumpsuit and sold on Amazon{: rel=nofollow}, comes printed with white bricks and the slogan, "Mexico will pay!" The jumpsuit has been getting attention lately because social activist Jeronimo Saldaña started a petition to remove the costume from the Amazon's website, reports Popsugar. Saldaña made headlines during the election by reappropriating Donald Trump's famous slogan to create a "Make America Mexico Again" hat.

In the petition to Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, Saldaña states,"Donald Trump's rise to power has been forged on a hate filled agenda that began with him referring to Mexican immigrants as rapists, killers and thieves. During his campaign, he perpetuated anti-Latinx sentiment by promising to build a 'big beautiful wall' to 'keep Americans safe'. Trump's promise of a border wall soon grew into an anti-immigrant chant that has been used to taunt Latinx children in classrooms, playgrounds, and school sporting events."

The costume was reportedly added to Amazon’s site July 2016, and the scariest part is the amount of four and five star reviews from people who actually purchased the costume. Someone who calls themselves "G," said this: "Fits good. I am 6'2", 195 lbs. I got the xl. Only people with no imagination/sense of humor were offended. Everyone else loved it. Even the democrats. Probably because it accents my package."

To be fair, it's possible Costume Agent is poking fun at Trump's claims he's going to build a wall, and not actually advocating doing so. Still, it comes off tasteless and extremely offensive not only to Latinx people, but to everyone who, you know, cares about their fellow citizens. Politics are stressful enough lately without bringing Halloween costumes into the equation. We're reached out to Amazon for comment on the costume and will update this post when we hear back.
